Yoga Nidra - the sleep before the awakening

Yoga Nidra or Yogic sleep is the deepest state of relaxation achieved in Shavasana, the corpse pose. It is the conscious act of stilling the mind and entering the realm of deep sleep. The shift from being awake to being asleep occurs unconsciously with most people as they try to drift off to sleep, most often following a train of thought. Making a shift from falling asleep like a zombie to relaxing tip to toe one breath at a time redefines how you sleep.

In Yogic sleep, your brain is in a deep state of relaxation, a surprising loss of consciousness, as though the consciousness attached to the human form has exited the body and you enter a space of thoughtless suspension while being asleep but wide awake.

Is this state of Yogic sleep, achievable? Is it possible to surrender to thoughtless judgements and experience the moment where there is no need to distinguish between real and unreal but only deep relaxation? Yes, but only if they are able to surrender and submit to the self. This deep state of relaxation is a self-induced trance that is rejuvenating and healing on all levels.

Practising Yoga Nidra has many benefits, physically and mentally. Apart from being relaxing, it helps manage and heal disorders like depression, anxiety, dealing with chronic illnesses, pain disorders and contributes to a better quality of life. Yogic sleep helps blood circulation, hormone regulation, pregnancies, and general well being while undergoing medical procedures.
